Patriotic Family Books Featured on Army Wife Talk Radio

I’m excited to be a guest tonight on The Army Wife Network show “Army Wife Talk Radio.” This weekly 90 minute live talk show is broadcast every Monday night from 8 to 9:30 p.m. EST and is designed specifically for Army wives by Army wives. It is primarily a resource designed to bridge the gap between military and civilian resources and the families that they strive to support. Listeners can participate in a variety of discussions on topics ranging from relationship builders to parenting advice and care package ideas to health and wellness tips.

The show’s purpose is to motivate, inspire and empower Army wives worldwide to make the most of their military journey. Listeners hear the broadcast via streaming audio through their computer speakers, and can participate in the conversation via live chat, Skype, or by calling in to the broadcast. The broadcast is live and then archived and available for download on the web site in mp3 format, and is also available through many podcast directories including Apple iTunes. The show has two main segments: Main Guest and Resource of the Week. I will be discussing my children’s picture book The Flag Keeper for the Resource of the Week segment, scheduled from 9:07 to 9:22 p.m. Earlier in the show, Marijo Tinlin will discuss her new book How to Raise an American Patriot, Making It Okay for Our Kids to Be Proud to Be an American.”

The Flag Keeper is an illustrated children’s picture book that teaches children about U.S. flag etiquette through a fiction story, flag facts, activity idea, and discussion questions. It follows the story of Elizabeth, a bear whose father goes away on a business trip. During his absence, she wants to prove that she can raise their American flag by herself without his help. Unfortunately, some amusing mishaps occur, such as raising the flag upside down. The book has received endorsements from representatives of the national American Legion and VFW posts. It is available in paperback and as a $1.99 e-book edition for Kindle, Nook and more. For a special $7.99 discount code, visit The Flag Keeper page. I’ve noticed that the book is often ordered in bulk on Amazon, so for that reason, I now have a special group orders offer.

Based on Army Wife Talk Radio’s 2010 performance, the program averages 2100 downloads per show, and I’m honored to be a guest. I hope you’ll stop by and listen to the show, either live or archived. And if you know anyone who might be interested in learning more about the Army Wife Network or Army Wife Talk Radio, please help to spread the word!

Classic YA Hockey Novel $2.99 on Kindle & Nook

With the NHL season scheduled to open in a few weeks, I have the perfect book to get you in the hockey mood. My classic young adult hockey novel, Face-Off, is now available as a $2.99 download for Kindle, Nook and Smashwords, with a brand new paperback edition scheduled for release in time for holiday shopping. You’ll be seeing a lot more about this book once the paperback is out, but I’ll give you the basics now.

I originally wrote Face-Off during high school study halls and it was published in 1992 when I was a teenager. It was mentioned in Publisher’s Weekly, School Library Journal, Booklist and many other review publications, and was named to many reading lists over the years. In fact, I was surfing the net a year or so ago and saw that the Hockey Hall of Fame Junior Education program had the book on its recommended reading list for kids and schools. I thought that was pretty neat – that a book written by a teenage American girl was still on the radar of the Hockey Hall of Fame nearly two decades after its release.

With the 20th anniversary on the horizon and Face-Off long out of print, I brought the book back for a new generation of readers. Although it is classified as a young adult novel, aimed at kids ages 12-16, I’ve received fan letters from children as young as nine. I’ve also heard from many adults who enjoyed reading it, as they love hockey or like revisiting their high school days through YA novels. Face-Off follows Brad and T.J. McKendrick, twin brothers who don’t get along at all. When their parents pull T.J. out of his expensive prep school, the brothers are forced to attend the same school and play on the same hockey team. Meanwhile, their parents are arguing all the time which worries the boys’ younger brothers. Can the feuding twins pull together for the sake of their teammates and their kid brothers?

I received many fan letters from young readers over the years and you can read snippets like this one on the Face-Off page of my web site: “This is, by far, one of the best books I have ever read…I couldn’t change any part of this story to make it better if I tried.” If you enjoy hockey, or are seeking a wholesome e-book read for your kids, I hope you will check out the Kindle, Nook, or Smashwords editions. More e-book editions are coming soon, and if you’d like to know when the paperback is out, then you can sign up for my mailing list and receive my holiday shopping newsletter this November. I’ll also be announcing the paperback release on this blog as well as on Twitter and Facebook. This is a very special book to me, and any help with spreading the word is much appreciated!

Win Book Prizes During Bestseller Bound Birthday Bash!

It’s hard to believe that it has been one full year since Bestseller Bound launched, bringing together indie authors, readers, and bloggers. This friendly community of like-minded people has become an important part of my life. Darcia Helle started this message board forum site, with input from myself and Maria Savva. My greatest contributions were coining the name Bestseller Bound and helping to write some of the mission statements, but Darcia and Maria have really kept the site blossoming with the day-to-day moderating and administering and have taken it in all sorts of wonderful directions. How Darcia has time to put out one excellent book after another, and be the leader of Bestseller Bound, I will never know but indie authors everywhere are thankful she brought us together. We’ve had all sorts of exciting projects, such as short story collections and sample chapter anthologies, not to mention the networking, book reviews, and literary discussion on the boards. If you’d like to come by and join the site, we’re always happy to have new members.

In honor of our anniversary/birthday event, a bunch of our members have gotten together to offer their books to interested readers. We have 12 prizes – 11 ebooks and 1 very special, not yet released, print book. The deadline for entry on all the blogs is midnight on Saturday, September 17.
