I’m thrilled to announce that my mystery novel with a touch of romance, Sink or Swim, is now an audiobook for Amazon, Audible, and iTunes. It is WhisperSync for voice ready so that readers can switch seamlessly between listening and reading, and readers who own the Kindle book will see a deep discount offered for the audiobook. Funda Duval did such an incredible job with the narration that listeners will feel as if this is a movie with the visual turned off. She gives each character a distinctive voice and her range is amazing – from her sympathetic, heartfelt portrayal of Cassidy, to the honeyed Texas accent of her love interest Zach, to the New Jersey bred, tough guy Reggie Elliott, to flaky obsessed fan Rhonda Sue Vanelli, to Cassidy’s gentle stepfather, to a young child, and much more. Even walk-on characters have distinctive voices. I had to laugh at one teenager who reminded me of Sean Penn’s Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
When I was writing Sink or Swim, I needed to make sure that Cassidy was coming across as sympathetic. She is headstrong and independent, however has hidden vulnerabilities. Funda got that and her portrayal of Cassidy drives those points home to listeners. In the book, personal trainer Cassidy Novak has gained fame for starring on a hit reality show. Not only does she lose and have to walk the plank, but upon returning home, Cassidy discovers she is being stalked. As her former competitors get killed off, Cassidy refuses to play by the stalker’s bizarre rules. She’s also being shadowed by photographer Zach Gallagher, who has been assigned to capture her personal moments for the local newspaper. She wants to trust Zach, but fears he may not be as nice as he seems. When the stalker forces a showdown, Cassidy must walk the plank again – this time for her life.
It’s no surprise that Funda does such a great job as she is an accomplished actress with impressive film and TV credits. She has appeared in various cop shows on TV, including Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: SVU, playing recovering addicts, gangster molls, and battered wives. She has also done many Off Broadway plays and musicals, has appeared in films such as the Sundance Film Festival hit Concussion, and has extensive voice-over experience. I knew that I wanted her to narrate the book after seeing her demo reel on her website.
