Excerpt:
From Chapter Two

“Oh, wait. There’s someone here to see you.”
He frowned. “I don’t have time today.”
“I know, I know.” Martha looked apologetic. “I tried to explain that your schedule is packed, but she insisted on waiting—”
“She?”
Martha glanced down at a pad on her desktop. “A Ms. Whitlock. Tyne Whitlock.”
Lucas stared. Blinked. Then he reached up and tugged at his tie, wondering who the hell shut off the room’s air supply.
“She’s waiting in your office. I tried to tell her your schedule was full, but…” Concern sharpened Martha’s tone. “Are you all right? She said she knew you. That you were old friends. That she’d only take a minute of your time. Should I not have let her in?”
Martha droned on and he watched her lips move, but he didn’t hear a word of what she said. A blind-sided punch wouldn’t have stunned him more than hearing that name. He lifted his hand and nodded at Martha to let her know everything was okay even though he had no idea if it was or not, then he turned and headed down the corridor.
“Don’t forget Larry and Nate. They’re waiting!”
Martha’s warning sounded like a distant echo.
Tyne. Here. In this building. In his office.
What had it been? Twelve, thirteen… no. Sixteen years. He scrubbed his fingers across his jaw.
He turned the corner and came to an abrupt halt. At the end of the corridor, the door of his office stood ajar. He saw Tyne’s perfect profile as she sat in a straight-backed chair staring at something out of his line of view.
In an instant, Lucas was catapulted into the past.
Darkness surrounded them like a cloak. Tyne’s soft sobs tore at his heart. Of all the girls he’d dated—and there had been more than a few—only she brought out in him a fierce compulsion to protect.
He swiped away her tears, the dark color of his thumb a stark contrast against her creamy white skin.
“I don’t understand them, Lucas. I never will.”
“Don’t worry,” he crooned. “It’s going to be all right. Trust me, babe. They can’t keep us apart. You’ll be eighteen soon too. We can do what we want then. Go wherever we want.”
He cradled her, his back supported by the massive pin oak. And when she stopped crying, she pulled away from him and gazed into his eyes. Her sweet face wrenched his heart and caused heat to spark his desire. Never had he wanted a girl the way he wanted Tyne. Raw need coursed through him.
She cradled his face between her palms and drew him to her. Her lips were hot against his. The kiss grew hungry, their breathing labored.
“Our love will last forever,” she whispered against his mouth.
He heard the question in her quavery tone, responded to her need for reassurance.
“Forever,” he groaned, tugging her down onto the mossy ground.
Lucas tilted his head to stare at the carpet in front of his shoes and gulped in the artificially-cooled air as he dragged his way out of the past. The grip he had on his attaché case made his hand throb almost as much as the memory had caused his groin to go all achy and needful.
Of course, their love hadn’t lasted forever.
He was within steps of the door when Tyne glanced in his direction. Nuances of various emotions passed across her face. And it was a striking face, Lucas couldn’t deny it. The years had refined her features—
She stood, smoothing her palms across the fabric of her skirt.
—and ripened her body. Her eyes were the same vivid blue he remembered, and her white-blond hair was still long and straight. He could easily recall the silky feel of it brushing against his bare chest. As teens, he’d thought of them as the perfect juxtaposition: she, all sunshine and light, he, dark like the night.
He forced his gaze back onto her face.
“Tyne.” He entered his office, puzzled by the strain in his voice. What really confused him was the fact that he couldn’t seem to get his tongue to form anything more.
“Hi, Lucas. It’s been a long time.” Her lush mouth pressed into a nervous smile, and his gut tensed.
He wanted to smile back. He truly did. With every fiber of his being. To let her know that he’d survived the sprawling interim since they’d parted just as well as she obviously had. But he couldn’t smile. Couldn’t speak. Couldn’t think.

Interview with Donna:

Q. How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
A. I think authors who face a lot of pain and anguish seem to write stories with great depth, with honesty and compassion. It could be that dealing with trauma brings out the best (or worst) in people. I believe that losing my mother at such a young age had a huge impact on me not just as a writer but as a human being. I became, I don’t know, more maternal towards my family, my friends, heck, towards everyone I meet… more giving of myself. I’m not sure. But I know that the loss could have made me bitter and angry. I’m just so grateful that the exact opposite seems to describe me.

Donna Fasano Author PictureQ. Where do you get your inspiration and ideas from?

A. My mind is always on the alert. I take ideas from everything I see, hear, read, experience. I have been known to take a snippet of conversation overheard in an elevator and turn it into a book (Return of the Runaway Bride), or from a location (His Wife for a While), or from a person I met (Taking Love in Stride). So be careful! If you interact with me, you might end up in one of my novels.

Q. What was your favorite part of this book to write? Which part was the hardest?
A. I really enjoyed writing the love scenes. In my sweet romances, all the ‘spice’ takes place behind closed doors. So this was very fun. And which part was hardest? The “kitchen love scene” (naughty pun intended!).

Q. If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?
A. Teacher. I love kids, and I often include them in my stories. I always say that children are very honest and outspoken. Kids inject a great deal of fun into a book.

Mother/Daughter Authors Part 2: Romance Novelist and Boundless Billionaires Author Liberty Blake

Today I’d like to welcome romance novelist Liberty Blake. You may have read my interview earlier in the week with Liberty’s daughter, Amanda Torrey, a young adult paranormal author. (If you didn’t, be sure to check it out!) Liberty’s interview is below. Read about her new Boundless Billionaires series, her take on the supernatural, motherhood, and more.

CBFINAL2NOOK
Your Boundless Billionaires series is a new contemporary series about men with money and the women who love them in spite of it. Each book in the series is a stand alone novel. How did you get the idea for this series?
We love to read about people with money. The tabloids make a living by publishing stories about the rich and famous. The most popular stories are about a celebrity’s downfall or their redemption. We grew up on the Disney version of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Women who are rescued by rich and powerful men. What we don’t see in those movies is that the woman has rescued the hero from loneliness and the death spiral his humanity has taken. While the hero rescues the heroine from the drudgery of scrubbing floors, she restores his spirit and his soul. These stories are still the basis for many of the romances we read today. I love them! I hope I show independent women who love the man for who he is inside. If he gave all his money away to charity and worked along beside her on a subsistence farm for their food, she would still love him. Because she fell in love with the man and not the trappings of his wealth. I decided to write a stand-alone novel series so that the reader doesn’t have to read the books in any special order. They may be connected through friendship or blood, but they do not have a continuing story which you must read each book in order to follow.

What are some of the potential conflicts that can come up when you have a man who is a billionaire falling in love with someone who doesn’t have nearly as much money as he does?

Whenever you have a hero who is uber-rich and a heroine who is monetarily challenged you have a built in conflict. The hero must always be aware that he is a target for gold-diggers and the heroine must always be worried, at least on some level, that everyone will believe she is a gold digger. To be able to unite these two people they must have more to overcome than their doubts about the worthiness of the other.

Tell us about the characters of Cassidy and Theron in The Counterfeit Bride.
Theron is a billionaire, while Cassidy owns a bar in a small Texas town, but basically that is a surface difference. Underneath the trappings of wealth they are far more similar than different. They both grew up in dysfunctional family situations, were willing to go to extraordinary lengths to help others, and didn’t want to get married to anyone, let alone each other.

Tell us about your romantic short story Spirit Board. Are supernatural subjects an interest of yours?

Spirit Board is a short story, or novella, about Sara Jane Marafae. In ancient times her many times great grandmother, a witch had fallen in love with a fae (fairie). It wasn’t until an angry Fairie Queen exposed the fae for who he really was, that Sara Jane’s ancestor realized that she had been seduced by Oberon himself. As a result of the Fairie Queen’s curse all of the witch’s decedents are females who are destined to never marry. (This is all back story which will be revealed in future books.)

Sara Jane’s story begins on Samhain (Halloween). She gets home from work with barely enough time to shower and meet her family for their usual ceremony and celebration to find her house has been invaded by her former roommate. She meets the sexy Luke when she opens the door and falls into his arms.
The story is filled with characters, from Sara Jane’s nonagenarian grandmother, to the Captain, a former sea captain ghost who watches over Sara Jane.
I love the supernatural. I have been a working psychic and I have lived in many haunted houses. I was born on All Soul’s Day, which I think accounts for a lot and I am a great believer in Karma. I have never had to seek revenge on anyone. I just sit back and watch the show as retribution befalls them.

At what age did you first get interested in writing?

I think it probably started before I learned how to read. I was always changing the ending of the fairy tales my grandmother read to me. I always thought I could make them better. Then I went to school and they gave me books where Dick and Jane ran and the dog had the ball. They were b-o-r-i-n-g. I knew I could write a better story than that. All I had to do was learn how to spell. When I was nine I complained to my grandmother that a toy typewriter wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t write a real story on that, so she got me a cute little Smith Carona portable typewriter. It was baby blue and made me feel like a real writer.

As a mother, in what ways did you try to encourage your children to develop a love of books and writing when they were growing up?
Books! I gave them lots of books. I shared my love of Trixie Belden and all her friends in Sleepy Hollow with all my girls.

What is it like having your daughter Amanda sharing the writing and publishing journey with you? Were you surprised she became an author or did you expect it?
Amanda and I attend writing workshops and conferences together. It is wonderful having someone so close to share the excitement of a good workshop with. She is also very good at supporting me. She’s always telling me to shut off the television and get back to writing. I always believed Amanda would be a writer, even when she did not. While she was still in elementary school she wrote “They Called it Dare Mountain” which was published in an anthology titled Young Authors of America by Random House. Amanda is a very talented woman and talent like that cannot be kept hidden forever.

In what ways do you help one another with tasks such as book promotion, networking and critiquing? Do you each have strengths that you’re able to share with each other?
I am very good at promoting others. I am also a great content editor; I catch all the little mistakes that irritate a reader. Amanda is the grammarian and a super-duper speller. She is also very good at researching the latest foibles of publishing. Sometimes we talk about what we are doing with our characters or out plots, but in general writing is a solitary art form and we like to do our own brainstorming. Neither one of us is very good about incorporating another person’s ideas into our work. We put a new meaning to solitary writing.

What was it like for you to read Amanda’s Teen Fury books? Are there any scenes, lines or characters that you read and thought “That’s so Amanda,” knowing her as well as you do?
The stories are so good they bring me to tears! Felicia’s mother is patient, kind, and understanding. She is an outstanding mother and dedicated to making her child’s life as good as she can. She welcomes all of Felicia’s friends with open arms and treats them like her own. She would go to the ends of the earth and back again for her daughter. That is Amanda.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on The Misplaced Bride, Book 2 of the Boundless Billionaires series.

Liberty’s Books:
The Counterfeit Bride: Texas rancher and bar owner Cassidy Flynn is shocked to learn the bride’s name in an upcoming high society wedding – Cassiopeia Dolmides. Mother/Daughter Authors Part 1: Teen Fury Young Adult Paranormal Author Amanda Torrey @amanda_torrey

I’d like to welcome Amanda Torrey today. Amanda is the author of the Teen Fury series, about an ordinary teenage girl named Felicia who learns she is the offspring of a Fury (a goddess of Vengeance) and a god of Mercy. Adolescence is tough enough without mythological genetic quirks, like snakes growing out of Felicia’s head when she loses her temper! This series grabbed me from Book One due to its mythology premise and Amanda’s knack for writing realistic teen dialogue. Speaking of genetics, Amanda is the daughter of romance novelist Liberty Blake. Read Amanda’s interview today, and then check out my interview with her mother!
Headshot

How did you get the idea for the Teen Fury series?

I can’t remember the precipitant, but one day I began imagining what the offspring of a Fury (basically, a goddess of Vengeance) and a god of Mercy would be like. I was intrigued by the notion of a child with such duality. Then I started imagining that the child was raised in the regular world with regular parents, fully in touch with the Mercy side of her nature. Having experienced my own teen years and being in the middle of my daughter’s teen years, I then imagined what would happen when the child became a teen… Having a Fury emerge didn’t seem like that far-fetched of an idea! I didn’t write the book right away because I was working on an adult paranormal romance and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to write YA at that point, but I took notes and kept them with my other stack of notes. Felicia (the protagonist) began to really nudge me, so finally I gave in and wrote her story.
Mighty Beech trees in sunny autumn forest

How do you anticipate Felicia changing and growing throughout the trilogy?

Felicia definitely has a lot of growing to do! In the first book, she makes some decisions that are purely based on her visceral reaction to external circumstances. The mom in me was saying, “No! Don’t do that! Bad choice!” The writer in me had to honor her choices, even if I could think of a million other ways she could handle the situation. Felicia is changing not only physically (becoming a woman AND having snakes emerge from her head when she’s angry), but also emotionally. She’s learning that her parents aren’t perfect, that friendships aren’t always easy to manage, and that she can’t always trust blindly. In the second book, Felicia struggles with the fine line between right and wrong and good and evil. As she grows, she begins to see things in a different way, and this new vision creates a new path for her. In book three, she finally learns to seek true balance and come to terms fully with her dual nature. I think this trilogy is one hundred percent about a young girl finding herself and figuring out how to stay true to what she believes.

What do you like about writing for young adults?

I love that teens are so full of life and hope, so optimistic for the future and so idealistic. I love writing characters who aren’t yet jaded by life, and who are open to learning and growing. I think that in YA novels, we are able to explore topics in a fresh way that isn’t always feasible in adult novels. I also enjoy writing a somewhat unreliable narrator. We only see things through her perspective, so we don’t really know the motivation or intent behind other characters other than what is filtered through Felicia’s limited viewpoint. Most importantly, I love the self-discovery that comes in the teen years; the uncertainty, the vacillation between hope and doubt, success and failure.
Mighty Beech trees in sunny autumn forest
You write in such a natural YA voice. How did you master that voice? Do you spend time with a lot of teens; are there any YA books that you read or TV shows that you watch to “stay current?”

Thank you so much! That’s a great compliment! Maybe I have never grown past my teen years… (hee, hee.) Okay, I’ve gotten old, but I do spend a lot of time with my teen children and their friends. I often have a van full of kids, and I like to casually “spy” on their conversations—not to get them in trouble or anything, but to be reminded of what issues are important to teens, how they react to situations, the cadence of their speech. I am a people-watcher by nature, and am not above sitting near a group of teens in the mall or park just so I can listen in while I read a book or eat a snack. (I swear I’m not a creeper! It’s for research purposes only!) I do also watch several teen shows with my kids—our favorites are currently Glee, Awkward, and The Carrie Diaries. I’ve been reading YA books since before I decided to write YA, and I’m always impressed with the authors who can capture the true voice of teens. There are some great YA books out there—if you aren’t reading them, you’re missing out on some amazing stories!

You were published at a young age. Since your mother is also a writer, what influence did she have on your developing an interest in reading and writing?

My mom was my biggest fan and my strongest supporter from the time I was a little girl. She always encouraged imagination (to this day, I believe she really did chase a unicorn when she went to Ireland!) She believed in me no matter what crazy ideas I came up with. When I wanted to be Claire in The Nutcracker, she told me I could be. When I wanted to be Annie, she thought that made perfect sense. When I wanted to be a teacher, she gave me every opportunity to pursue that interest. Books were never in short supply at our house, no matter how little money we had. I’ve never seen my mom without several books in her pocketbook and a houseful of novels waiting to be read. I grew up watching her write and seeing how much joy she derived from the act. I can’t say I wanted to be a writer when I was young—it’s more of something I finally gave in to rather than something I aspired to (I didn’t realize that not everyone walks around creating scenes and dialogue in their head every day). But when my story was chosen to be published in the Young Authors of America anthology when I was in seventh grade, you’d think my success was my mom’s. I remember her greeting me at the bus stop with the box of author copies that were sent to me from NY. She was hugging the books to her chest and crying. I’ve never seen such pride anywhere else, and the image will be with me forever. In my adult years, it’s my mom who encouraged me to join the writing groups she discovered. She reads my work enthusiastically, and most of our conversations now revolve around writing or marketing. She’s a talented writer, and I always look forward to reading her works in progress.

What is it like to have a mother who is in the writing and publishing business also? What are some ways you help each other with the writing journey and with marketing?

Having a mom in the business is great. When we travel somewhere together, we listen to writer’s workshops in the car, then discuss them. We go to conferences together and always have a guaranteed roommate. We are able to brainstorm together (and we both know that when one of us needs to talk out a story problem, we aren’t looking for someone to solve it or even offer suggestions. We know that sometimes we just need to talk it out to find the solution ourselves.) We read and critique each other’s work. I tend to be more on the shy side when it comes to promoting my books in person, but my mom is more than happy to brag about her daughter. She brings my book to libraries, drops off bookmarks anywhere she can, and is constantly posting about my books on her social media. I obsess over researching topics in the writing world, so I share all the interesting snippets, marketing and promotional ideas, etc. so she doesn’t miss out on something. Oh, and if someone says something bad about our writing, we can reassure the other that obviously that person doesn’t know what they’re talking about. (hee, hee.)

What was it like to read your mother’s books? Was there ever a scene, line or character she’s written that made you think “that’s so her,” knowing her as well as you do?

Well let’s just say that my mom writes romance, and sometimes it can get pretty steamy. There are certain scenes that are awkward to read, so I try to brainwash myself into thinking I’m reading a stranger’s writing. I’m always impressed with her writing—she creates these amazing plots and characters. And when the heroine is kicking butt in one way or the other, I know that my mom is letting her inner heroine out to play. I’ve always admired my mom’s kick-butt attitude and fearless way of moving through life, and I do believe she captures that spirit in her books.

Teen Fury: Unleashed: Adopted at birth, fifteen year old Felicia Murphy has no idea she’s the offspring of a Fury and a god of Mercy. The discovery will soon shatter her world… Felicia’s reputation as stable and trustworthy means everything if she’s to win the grant for the troubled kids she mentors. Snakes emerging from her head, massive mood swings, and a strong thirst for vengeance do not fit into her plans. She has no time to worry about her adoptive parent’s separation and the unwanted discovery that her biological parents are supernatural freaks. She can’t confide in her friends; who would believe her? As her life spins out of control, she allows herself to be distracted by the two new guys who are suddenly showering her with attention, pulling her in different directions. Felicia has choices to make. Embrace the Fury and risk everything, or find a way to tame the beast.

Teen Fury: Embraced Sixteen-year-old Felicia Murphy has learned the pitfalls of letting the snakes in her head control her life, and she has no intention of letting them interfere in her future. She knows it’s not her duty to dish out vengeance, but, oh, the temptation… Battling near-constant headaches bites, but with Ryder by her side, she’s able to keep the Fury at bay. She doesn’t care that Meg, her biological-mother-from-hell, has escaped Mercy’s prison and will be playing dirty to get Felicia on her side. What she does care about is having a perfect night at the prom and successfully debuting the new mentor room for the troubled kids in town. She refuses to play into Meg’s sick, twisted games. Lines become blurred when Felicia’s best friend is brutalized. Felicia knows she could have prevented the pain if she had been willing to wield her one secret weapon. What once was black and white now becomes soiled with shades of gray. Will this self-discovery encourage her to embrace her craving for vengeance? And if so, will Ryder be able to accept her for who she has become?

When not writing, Amanda enjoys hanging with her kids, reading, playing in nature, obsessively checking Facebook, visiting Disney World (as often as possible), and her latest obsession- Just Dance 4 (though she’s not very good at it!) She loves meeting new people, and especially loves to hear from readers! She truly believes that if anyone can change the world in a positive way, teens can.

Are you a bookworm who enjoys reality TV or the entertainment industry? Then hurry over and add these bargain books to your summer reading list as each novel has a plot thread relating to reality TV or television in general. To celebrate the launch of this list, I hope you’ll enjoy the “reruns” I am showcasing of my June 2011 interviews with former contestants from the reality TV shows Survivor, Top Chef, Beauty and the Geek, Shark Tank, Bachelor Pad, I Love New York and Big Brother.

Here is an excerpt of my interview with David Olsen, who won the fourth season of Beauty and the Geek with his partner Jasmine.

What was it like to have cameras rolling all the time? How hard was it to get used to being in the public eye?

It’s like ordinary life. People in the 21st century are on camera all the time, especially in urban environments; they just might not realize it. The big difference was that the cameras were a little more obvious. That said, my attitude did change over time. Near the beginning, I was a little more circumspect about what I said, deeply aware how my words could serve as the source of deep embarrassment and was sometimes relieved when the cameras left me alone. Over the course of the show, I felt more pressure to be entertaining and say witty things so I could be seen more. To be clear, this was self-induced pressure and not external from the producers. But if a camera crew was filming a conversation and suddenly walked away, I would be insulted that I wasn’t “interesting” enough for them to pay attention to me.

What was it like to have cameras rolling all the time? How hard was it to get used to being in the public eye?
I was self-conscious at first. They could show any of it to the entire country, but more importantly, my family would be watching. Eventually, I got used to having the cameras around and wouldn’t think about them too much. (If I wanted them to go away, I’d read a book for 30 seconds.) It may have been easier to ignore them than if I’d been on another reality show because we spent most of our time in a mansion; when we were outside and interacting with the public, they kept the cameras well-hidden.

I discussed why I came up with this idea, how the participating authors worked together, and what our hopes are for this campaign.

I think it’s an interesting article for readers to see the other side of being an author: business and marketing. I also hope that the article will inspire other authors to work together. Writing is such a solitary business that it can be a nice change of pace to work on a project with some kindred spirits. I hope you’ll follow the yellow brick road to stop by and leave us a comment on the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood blog!

Bargain Book Spotlight

The Hot Shots (Scotland Yard Exchange Program) – If you were a (maybe not so) mild-mannered decorator minding her own business, would you jump off the deck of the USS Constitution into Boston Harbor with a perfect stranger? You would if he looked like hunky Chauncey Miller. Even if Chauncey isn’t exactly Bond-James-Bond in the name department, he sparks the interest of spunky Boston Decorator Sophia Alano. That is until her big career break to host a TV decorating show gets side-tracked and she ends up the target of the notorious terrorist who happened to be out for revenge against her man Miller. She goes on the run with Chauncey protecting her and they end up in London with a plan to set a trap for the mad man with the grudge. But once Chauncey catches the mad terrorist, can she return to her decorator dream job and live happily ever after without her dream man?

Here is an excerpt from my interview with Michelle Costa, a contestant on Big Brother 10 and host of the radio show Manic Mondays.

What was the most challenging part about being on Big Brother?

There were a few challenges I faced being in the Big Brother house. I had no access to TV, phone, Internet, reading, writing and singing. And of course, being away from your family and friends for over three months.
