Everything You Need to Know About the Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon clearly wants to go head-to-head with Apple and they aren’t being stingy about it. A few months ago, Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire, which hopes to throw the Apple iPad off of the computer tablet market. In a nutshell, the Kindle Fire is a tablet that has the exact same features of the iPad, but which is being offered at a much cheaper price. While iPad prices begin at $499, the Kindle Fire only sells for $199, making a huge impact on people who are getting ready to shop for the holidays. The Kindle Fire is now available worldwide.

The display of the Amazon Kindle Fire stands at seven inches, which is a bit shorter than that of the iPad. However, it is still very functional and won’t even bother you if you aren’t too picky about your viewing space. The Fire also uses a top-notch dual-core processor, which works at the exact same processing speed as the Apple’s dual-core processor. The storage of the Fire currently stands at 8GB, though, and doesn’t have any options for a bigger memory like the iPad does. On the other hand, though, Amazon does provide free online storage with Amazon Cloud, which can take care of all of your digital content on Amazon. How great is that?

Then there is the Amazon Silk, which is a creative Cloud-accelerated browser. This browser splits the overall work of loading webpages between two different interfaces, thus making it easier to load webpages while conserving battery life at the same time. Another unique feature that this tablet has and that other tablet manufacturers do not have is that you can access a lot of media content from Amazon through it. In fact, Fire users can get access to hundreds of thousands of TV programs and movies, reading material and games, as well as colored magazines, with it. The Kindle Fire weighs 14.6 ounces or 413 gams, and its battery life can last up to 8 hours if you read books on it. Naturally, it will last up to a little less than that if you continually watch videos on it, though.

The Kindle Fire Table is also Wi-Fi capable, so you can do practically anything on the Internet on it. It accesses Wi-Fi networks and hotspots and runs on an Android operating system, too, which means that you can access Google’s Apps Market with it, as well. So, although Apple may have more to offer than Amazon when it comes to the Apps department, Fire users will not be left in the dark since they will be taken care of by the Android apps, as well. So, what are you waiting for? Buy an Amazon Kindle Fire now!

Fri. & Sat. Only – Face-Off Young Adult Book Free on Kindle

My young adult family hockey novel is FREE on Kindle for 2 days only – Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday Feb. 4. If your child ages 9-16 has access to Kindle, or if you enjoy reading young adult novels yourself, I hope you’ll snatch the book up. Every download gives the book more exposure on Amazon. (The book is also available in paperback on Amazon (eligible for the 4-for-3 promotion) and Barnes & Noble if your child doesn’t have access to a Kindle.) It’s a great read for both reluctant and proficient readers, especially for sports fans.

What might have been a dream come true has turned into a nightmare. Brad’s twin brother T.J. has gotten himself out of the fancy prep school his father picked for him and into the public high school Brad attends. Now T.J., the bright light in his father’s eyes, is a shining new star on the hockey team where Brad once held the spotlight. And he’s testing his popularity with Brad’s friends, eyeing Brad’s girl and competing to be captain of the team. The whole school is rooting for a big double-strength win…not knowing that their twin hockey stars are heating up the ice for a winner takes all face-off.

The book also examines a parent separation and its effect on children. One unusual thing about this book is that I wrote it when I was 16 years old. It was originally published when I was 18 – this is the second edition. Here is some praise for the first edition:

- The Hockey Hall of Fame’s Junior Education Program included Face-Off on its recommended reading list for the junior and intermediate levels.

- Best Books for Young Teen Readers: Grades 7-10 by John T. Gillespie – Recommended in the sports category.

You can read some fan mail from kids on the Face-Off page of my web site. I hope you and/or your children enjoy the book as much as I loved writing it!

Does Public Speaking Make You Uneasy? Check Out These Books

Back in November, I discussed how I’ve overcome Selective Mutism, a disorder of childhood characterized by an inability to speak in certain settings, such as at school and in public places, despite speaking in other settings (e.g. at home with family.) Many people who knew me as a child are amazed that I now speak at libraries, schools and bookstores. In my blog post, I fessed up about how public speaking still isn’t my favorite thing to do, but how I’ve gotten a little more comfortable with it.

This post 13 Books to Polish Your Speaking Skills was brought to my attention and I’d like to share it with my readers. If you foresee public speaking in your future and would like some helpful tips, then please check out this informative article detailing the different books available on this topic. Read through this list to find amazing books on speaking, offering advice, information, and research that can help make public speaking a much less dreaded occurrence.

Tips for Starting Your Own Book Club

When you are busy with work, home, school, and whatever else you are involved in, it can be difficult to find a way to relax and spend time with people who are interested in the same sorts of things you are. A great way to get to know people better is to start a book club. You get the benefits of social interaction, as well as the motivation to dig into a great book.

Book clubs are especially great for busy moms who want something to take them away during breaks between household chores, or students taking online courses who want social interaction that they don’t get at school. Even teens can enjoy book clubs to remind them that reading can be fun. Mother-daughter book clubs are a fun way to bring generations together, and book clubs focused around a particular hobby or interest can help you meet people who enjoy the same things as you.

Beginning a book club can fill several needs: a student whose online learning program requires reading several novels might join a book club to help her understand the concepts of a story. Or, a company might consider starting a book club for employees who want to learn new and innovative business methods. The main focus of a book club shouldn’t necessarily be the book; instead, the social element and the chance to learn from friends and peers should be an important part of a book club experience.

Getting started

To start a book club, contact people you think might be interested. Ideally, they should live near you so you can meet together regularly without too much hassle. Decide how frequently they would want to meet: you can either meet weekly and read just part of the book each week, or meet less regularly and read a whole book between meetings.

Let the people who are interested offer suggestions for things they actually want to read and pick something that seems like it would be enjoyable for all of them. One of the biggest questions is whether to read fiction or nonfiction. Fiction can capture the imagination in a way that real life doesn’t always achieve. Nonfiction books often explore ideas that don’t make their way into popular media, but that can be critical for understanding the world. You can choose one or the other for your book club or switch between them so you get to read both types of books.

Book club rules

When leading the discussion, talk about parts of the book that resonated to each of you. This is a great way to get to know the other participants, and to find out what they care about. You can talk about the characters in a fictional book and what you learned about yourselves from reading their stories. With nonfiction, you can talk about how to apply the ideas you learned about to your real life. As a discussion leader, it is your job to encourage everyone to participate and give their input to the discussion.

Book clubs will look different depending on the people you bring together and your interests, but they all help keep the participants from losing their love for books. Perhaps the most important reason to be a part of a book club is that it keeps you from getting turned off to reading. People who read together in a book club will often remember how much they enjoy reading and continue reading for pleasure, even when the book club parts ways.

Twenty-Five Years Ago Today Reaching New Readers on Kindle

I’m pleased that my Twenty-Five Years Ago Today campaign is going well, with the book currently on three Amazon Top 100 lists including Romantic Suspense and Historical Mystery. During the campaign, the overall ranking went from over 100,000 (yuck) to in the 700s (much better!) and the book is still selling well. Since I just joined a fantastic new tribe of writers and book bloggers on Triberr, I am doing one more blog post to help get the word out to readers of mystery, romance, and literary fiction as the book is a blend of all three. Then I’ll be turning my attention to teddy bears for a bit. (My soon-to-be-released children’s ebook bundle…I’m nothing if not diverse!)

Do You Like Reality TV? Check Out These Reality Show Novels

If you enjoy reality TV and love to read, did you know there are several novels with reality show themes? Chanta Rand, author of one such novel, will be interviewing me tonight at 7 PM CST on her radio program. If you can’t listen live, you can also catch the rerun.

Chanta spotlights interviews with romance authors across the country. Listeners learn what’s new in romance and the romance industry in general. Tonight will be a little different since Chanta and I both have books with a reality show twist. I’ll be discussing my mystery/romantic suspense novel Sink or Swim, in which personal trainer Cassidy Novak attracts a stalker after appearing on a reality show set aboard a Tall Ship.

Chanta is the author of Signs of Love, about a former entertainer who tries to find his soulmate on a dating show while also keeping a bossy IRS auditor off his back.

If you enjoy reality TV, mystery, or romance, don’t miss the interview. And if you’d like to discover more reality show-themed novels, check out the eight titles on this Reality TV Listmania list.
