Kevin Corvelli from Night on Fire

Today’s contestant on the fictional game show Sink or Swim is Kevin Corvelli, 32, of Honolulu, Hawaii, the protagonist in Douglas Corleone’s award-winning mystery series, published by St. Martin’s Minotaur.

Here’s a recap of the rules: the three literary characters with the highest number of unique commenters to their post will be chosen as winners at the end of the year. Be sure to leave Kevin your comments to help him advance to the finals. Here are his answers to the Sink or Swim 6.

1. Tell us about the book or series you’re from.
I’m the protagonist in Douglas Corleone’s award-winning mystery series, published by St. Martin’s Minotaur. As a criminal defense attorney, I’m tasked with investigating crimes and having clients acquitted at trial. It’s no easy job either; Corleone really stacks the evidence against me. In Night on Fire, I represent a beautiful but troubled young bride charged with arson and murder. The victim is her new husband, and Erin Simms had motive and opportunity, not to mention a history of starting fires.

2. What is something about yourself that no one else knows?
I sometimes come off as a womanizer, but what I really want is to settle down. It’s just so difficult to trust people in my line of work. Everyone lies. I had my heart broken in One Man’s Paradise, and I don’t intend to make the same mistake twice.

3. Tell us about an unusual job or hobby that you’ve had?
During law school, I worked for the celebrity defense attorney Milt Cashman in New York. The media calls him Not Guilty Milty; I still consider him a mentor and friend. During those three years, Milt represented everyone from the head of the Tagliarini crime family to rap artists such as Rabid Dawg and Shave Ice from hip hop duo Death on the Rocks. I learned more during those three years than most lawyers will learn in a lifetime of practicing law.

4. What is the strangest or most exciting thing that has ever happened to you?
I’ve been punched, shot at, and stabbed in the abdomen. But I’m still standing.

5. What would you do if you won a million dollars?
I’d like to say I’d quit the law and move to Dublin. But I think the law will always call to me. Right now, I can’t see myself walking away from this life. Besides, a million dollars will just about pay off all my student loans. Maybe leave me enough for a used Hyundai.

6. Please tell us briefly about your author and list web sites.
What can I say, the man likes his liquor. Hey, if he’s going to expose my flaws, I’m going to expose his. Our lives diverged about five years ago when we both moved from New York to Hawaii. I continued practicing law; he went on to write novels about me.
One Man’s Paradise won the 2009 Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award. Night on Fire is his second novel. You can learn more about him at

Don’t forget to leave Kevin some comments to help him advance!
For newcomers, this on-line “game show” is inspired by the mystery novel Sink or Swim.

  1. This book just went on my to-read list, Douglas and Kevin!

  2. Poor Kevin! = )

  3. Kevin is quite a character! I like his responses but I’m not sure about that million dollars. 🙂
