Today I’m highlighting my young adult title Dark Before Dawn, which fits very nicely into our theme of changes. Teenage girls go through many changes, but my character Dawn is blind-sided with lots of them at once. Her mother uproots her from Boston to the beach town of Covington, Maine, where Dawn’s new stepfather and stepbrother live. Dawn is forced to live with her new family, as well as start in a new high school and make new friends, not easy when you’re hiding the little tidbit that you’re psychic. And that you can occasionally read other people’s minds.

The real catalyst for Dawn’s change comes when she meets Serina, a local fortuneteller who leads secret psychic classes for a small group of teenage girls. Meanwhile, a series of mysterious accidents plague the town. Dawn walks a fine line between good and evil as she balances the excitement of fitting in and finally learning how to control her psychic abilities with a growing sense of foreboding. The book is available in print and e-book editions, as well as in a brand new Audible audiobook narrated by Cassandra Morris. YA audiobook fans will recognize Cassandra from her narration of books in the Gossip Girl series, Pretty Little Liars series, and The Clique series, and she has also narrated biographies for Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.

Change is inevitable for teenage girls as they try to fit in with their peers yet also discover who they are and carve out their own identities. It’s a challenging time. We all want to belong, yet we all need to develop the self esteem to be ourselves. I think teenage girls will identify with Dawn’s journey of transformation and that it will remind adult women of what it was like to be that age. (which could prove helpful if they are parenting a tween or teen girl!)
