Chocolate From A Non-Chocolate Fan With Mystery Author Terry Shames @Terryshames

Dead Broke
Terry Shames is one of the authors featured in the new release: Bake, Love, Write: 105 Authors Share Dessert Recipes and Advice on Love and Writing. Terry is the author of the best-selling Samuel Craddock series, set in the fictional town of Jarrett Creek, Texas. The Toronto Star called Craddock, “the most engaging new American sleuth in crime fiction.” She lives in Berkeley, Ca and loves to bake!

What is the name of the recipe you included in Bake, Love, Write? Could you tell us a little about it, and why did you choose that recipe?

One page 24, I shared Momo’s German Chocolate Cake. As I mentioned in the notes about the recipe, my grandmother, Ada “Momo” Gaines, didn’t much like chocolate. And although I like it, I’m much more a “custard” person. But the rest of our huge family were mostly chocolate fans. And they loved this recipe. I looked at other recipes for German Chocolate Cake, and this one was different. Since my grandmother was 100% Scots-Irish, maybe it is less “German.”

Could you give a short quote of the advice you included in the book?
We were asked to contribute both relationship advice and writing advice. Although the following quote is about writing, I think it could work for both writing and relationships: “Commitment means digging deep inside and finding what only you have to offer as a writer.”

Use your writerly powers of description to describe your kitchen.
If I had to choose one room in my house to stay in all the time, it would be my kitchen. It’s a huge room, meant to be a working kitchen. The walls are faux-painted in an Italian style and Italian colors—bright orange and yellow, accented with green window-sills and blue and plum-colored doors. To tone down what could be overwhelming colors, the cabinets are painted a quiet caramel in the same value as the yellow walls, the floors are hardwood and the counter tops are butcher block. When we moved into the house, my son was young and I knew I wanted to divide the kitchen into my work area and the males “grab-it-and-go” area. There’s an imaginary diagonal line dividing the two areas. It meant that I could be cooking undisturbed by males who wanted food or beverages from the pantry or the refrigerator, or who wanted to use the microwave. It works beautifully—except who knew that my son would turn out to love cooking. But I was perfectly happy for him to invade the working area of the kitchen.

Tell us about your latest release.
Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek is the third in the best-selling Samuel Craddock series. At the time I wrote it, many towns were declaring bankruptcy, and I wondered what it would be like for the town of Jarrett Creek, setting for all the novels, to find itself in that situation. It meant no money for town services—including a limited amount of money for a police department. So what happens when someone shows up dead—and the someone happens to be a man who appears to have had a hand in the financial debacle that lead to the bankruptcy? Who better than Samuel Craddock to step in and sort it out?

Here are more details on Bake, Love, Write below:
What do most authors have in common, no matter what genre they write? They love desserts. Sweets sustain them through pending deadlines and take the sting out of crushing rejection letters and nasty reviews. They also often celebrate their successes—selling a book, winning a writing award, making a bestseller list, or receiving a fabulous review—with decadent indulgences. And when authors chat with each other, they often talk about their writing and their lives. Recipes. Writing. Relationships. In this cookbook 105 authors not only share their favorite recipes for fabulous cakes, pies, cookies, candy, and more, they also share the best advice they’ve ever received on love and writing.
