I’m delighted to welcome Helena Fairfax today. Helena is one of the authors featured in the new release: Bake, Love, Write: 105 Authors Share Dessert Recipes and Advice on Love and Writing. Helena Fairfax is a British author who lives in the north of England. Her first novel, The Silk Romance, was a contender for the UK’s Romantic Novelists’ Association Award for New Writers and runner-up in the Global Ebook Awards. When not writing, Helena walks the moors near where she lives, dreaming up her heroes and happy endings.
1. What is the name of the recipe you included in Bake, Love, Write? Could you tell us a little about it, and why did you choose that recipe?
The recipe I chose was Rhubarb Crumble and Custard. It’s a typically English recipe. My mum used to grow her own rhubarb in our back garden and would make this dessert for us quite often. I also have fond memories of eating it for school dinners.
2. Could you give a short quote of the advice you included in the book?
The best advice I received is never give up. Writing is often a slog. Keep at it, until you’ve finished that book!
3. Use your writerly powers of description to describe your kitchen.
My kitchen is quite small, but there’s enough room for a table so we can sit down to dinner. I have an old dresser against one wall that I painted blue. It holds a china tea-set belonging to my Irish grandma, some Russian dolls and some tea-pots, and all my cookery books. One wall is painted dark red, and the rest are all cream. I have a print in one corner that my nieces bought me, which lists all the places I’ve ever lived. On one wall is a tapestry of a rose that my mum stitched, and on another is a beautiful red and cream tapestry I bought in South America.
I can look out on my back yard as I’m cooking or washing up and see all the rose bushes I planted, which my family and friends bought me last year for my birthday. My kitchen is my favourite room in the house.
4. Tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is a contemporary romance called A Way from Heart to Heart. I took the title from a beautiful Afghan saying that goes, ‘There is a way from heart to heart.’ It sums up the theme of the story perfectly, reflecting the human heart’s enduring capacity for love, despite all the odds. The book is set partly in London, and partly on the Yorkshire moors, where I live.
Here is the blurb:After the death of her husband in Afghanistan, Kate Hemingway’s world collapses around her. Kate’s free time is spent with a charity for teenage girls, helping them mend their broken lives – which is ironic, since her own life is fractured beyond repair. Reserved, upper-class journalist Paul Farrell is everything Kate and her teenage charges aren’t. But when Paul agrees to help Kate with her charity, he makes a stunning revelation that changes everything. But can Kate take a risk with her son’s happiness as well as her own?

Here are more details on Bake, Love, Write below:
What do most authors have in common, no matter what genre they write? They love desserts. Sweets sustain them through pending deadlines and take the sting out of crushing rejection letters and nasty reviews. They also often celebrate their successes—selling a book, winning a writing award, making a bestseller list, or receiving a fabulous review—with decadent indulgences. And when authors chat with each other, they often talk about their writing and their lives. Recipes. Writing. Relationships. In this cookbook 105 authors not only share their favorite recipes for fabulous cakes, pies, cookies, candy, and more, they also share the best advice they’ve ever received on love and writing.
