Interview with Contemporary Romance Author Allie Boniface @AllieBoniface1

Cocktail Cruise Box Set

I’m happy to welcome author Allie Boniface today, who’s just released her first boxed set of three sexy novellas – along with a collection of cocktail recipes from other romance authors, including yours truly! Allie has been writing since 2002 and is the author of seven full-length contemporary romance novels.

Has your muse always known what genre you would write and be published in?
I didn’t always know I wanted to be a romance writer, no. But I have always loved happy endings in both movies and books, so when I discovered that I could write them, I gravitated toward contemporary romance as a genre that was satisfying and a natural fit for the stories I wanted to tell, about real people in real places.

What is your favorite part of writing?
I love the creative process, discovering characters and story lines that reveal themselves as I write. I love moments when the hero and heroine realize they’re meant for each other, and I love when the characters take off in directions I’d never planned when I started their story.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

At times it can be tough to slog through writer’s block. Sometimes the story just isn’t happening, and that’s frustrating. I have to take a step back, or some time off, and brainstorm totally different ways to come at the scene.

Can you tell us about your road to publication?
Sure! I’ve told this story many times, because it still resonates very deeply with me. I had always played around with the idea of “what if” when it came to writing and publishing, but after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center (I live about an hour outside of NYC), I realized that we are never guaranteed a future, and that dreams can die if we don’t pursue them. I started writing seriously, with an eye on publication, in early 2002. I sold my first manuscript to Samhain Publishing in 2006, One Night in Boston. I went on to publish 3 more books with Samhain, and 1 book with another small press, Lyrical Press, before deciding last year to give indie publishing a try. I’ve since released the three books in the Hometown Heroes series and the 3 novellas in the Cocktail Cruise series.

How much of you is in the books you write? In what ways?
I often use people I’ve met or places I’ve visited in the stories I write. And yes, sometimes my heroines have elements or longings of the inner ‘me’ too. Sometimes those outside influences develop as very general ideas or starting points, but a few minor characters in my books are clearly and closely based on people in my life. I love writing contemporary romance because there are stories all around us, every day. Just open the newspaper!

What is your latest book, in the works or just published?
I’m excited to be celebrating the release of the Cocktail Cruises Collection this month, which is a trilogy of novellas all set on or around a cruise ship. The titles themselves are based on sexy drinks: Tequila Sunrise, Sex on the Beach, and Between the Sheets. This set also has a bonus section: twelve yummy drink recipes (alcoholic and not) and fun excerpts shared by fellow romance authors, including some Amazon and USA Today best-sellers. I thought it would be a great way to celebrate the holidays, with “Spirits for All Seasons!”

What else have you written already?
I have 3 “One Night” novels, which all take place over 24 chapters and 24 hours (One Night in Boston, One Night in Memphis, and One Night in Napa). I’ve also published 3 books in the Hometown Heroes series, The Promise of Paradise, Beacon of Love, and Inferno of Love. Finally, I had the great experience of being part of the Passionate Kisses boxed set with nine other authors, which released back in June. We have coming out in February 2015! Passionate Kisses 2

How much time do you spend promoting your books?
Ugh. Both not enough and too much! Promotion can be all-consuming, if you want to truly connect with readers and get the word out about your books. I spend time on Facebook but not too much time on Twitter. I do blog 3 days a week and send out a newsletter when I have a new release or special news to share. But I also have to remember to save most of my free time for writing!

Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?
I have been a full-time high school English and Education teacher for the past 18 years, which makes finding the time to write a challenge! I love teaching, though, which means writing stays as a second, part-time job. I get the most done during summers and vacations!

What do you read? Do you read different genres when you’re writing versus not writing?
Since I have two degrees in English, I do have a fondness for classic literature, like Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Dumas, and others. I also like women’s fiction and, in recent years, young adult. There’s some great YA being written lately that has wonderful characters and stunning themes (John Green and Rainbow Rowell come to mind). Never stop reading! It’s the key to inspiring great writing.
