Interview with Sizzling Small Town Romance Author Melissa Keir @melissa_keir #SumHtRom

I welcome Melissa Keir to my blog today. Melissa is an award winning and international best-selling author of small town romances with quirky characters. When not writing, Melissa does movie reviews for the local radio station and teaches our next generation. Keeping busy is her mantra!

Thank you for having me today. I’m excited to share my latest release with you. It will be a part of a box set with 15 other amazing authors. All stories are new and will keep warm at night.

Do you outline your books or wing it? Describe your process.
I’m a pantser. I write by the seat of my pants. Usually I begin with the characters and a rough idea of the storyline. I know how the story begins and where I want the characters to end up (with a Happily Ever After) but they dictate their story. They take me along for the ride along with them!

How do you decide on setting?
I love small towns. I grew up in Amherst, Ohio which I used as the setting for my Wilder Sisters Series. All my stories feature small towns, from out West or the Midwest. There’s something about a small town where everyone knows everyone, watches out for others (or gossips about them) and has some quirky characters.
Each of the stories dictates its own town. My latest release “Protecting Her Pigg” is set in a small Midwest town where the characters from the Pigg Detective Series live. Think a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.

Some writers edit excessively as they write; others wait until a novel is finished to do the bulk of editing. How about you?

I must go back and edit as I write. Since I write a little each day or a few times a week, it’s important for me to go back and re-read before moving forward. As I go through the manuscript each time, I find things that I change or improve upon. When I’m done with the story, I send it off to my crit partners to look over and then off to the editor.

What inspired your latest release?
My accountant shared a story from his life with me where he had to escape a hotel because of a fire. He had been stopping at the hotel to shag and someone on his floor had stopped to end their life. When the two events collided, he was breaking out the window and jumping to safety with his date.

How much of you is in the books you write? In what ways?
I love to include real events in each of my books. If you read my stories, you should message me so that we can chat about what was real and what was made up. While the heroines aren’t me, they are combinations of people I know and the person I’d love to be. However, I do include a little bit of my husband in my heroes. After all, he’s my hero!

What is your latest book, in the works or just published?
My latest book, Protecting Her Pigg, is the second book in the Pigg Brothers trilogy. It is currently on pre-order in the boxset, Summer Heat, along with fifteen other best-selling authors. It will be released on May 24th, 2016 and is currently only 99 pennies. All those steamy stories for less than one dollar…what a deal!

Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?
What career haven’t I had? I was a retail clothing store manager, wife and stay-at-home mother and have taught everything from preschool through middle school. I loved the connections with other people. When I worked in retail, I would help shoppers find great bargains or find the perfect outfit for their night out. As a teacher, I love the students. They make each day worthwhile. Seeing their faces light up…it’s a blessing. Last year, I shared my writing process with my students and we talked about the opening hook and shared my struck frustrations… and because of this, each one of my students found their passion for writing.

You’re having a party. What character from your book do you hope attends? Why? What character do you hope doesn’t attend? Why?

I’d love to have my heroes at my party. Who wouldn’t love to be surrounded by sexy guys, especially the Pigg brothers? They are sin walking…three men who are committed to protecting their town and the people in it. They faced the loss of their parents and came out stronger and unified.
I really can’t think of anyone that I wouldn’t want to have at my party. Even Mr. Wilder would be a fun addition. And while my villains aren’t people I’d want to hang out with (they might even try to kill me), I think that a good party has to have a little excitement. *wink, wink*

What might we be surprised to know about you?
I’m the oldest of five girls all named with “M” names. My poor dad didn’t know what to do with the girls, so we ice fished, learned to shoot and did the yard work. I graduated high school at 16 and started college right away but got distracted by the freedom and didn’t complete my degrees until after I was married.

What music “soothes your soul”? Do you listen to music as you write?
I can’t have music or the television on while I’m writing. I like the silence and often write in my bed surrounded by the dogs. But music is my passion. I listen to all genres. I have some favorite songs from the 1940’s. Of course, they are love songs. I tend to focus on the words and the storyline. Is it any wonder that I love writing?
