I recently had the opportunity to be interviewed on a topic close to my heart – Type 1 Diabetes. Stacey Simms was kind enough to interview me on her wonderful Diabetes Connections podcast. Having the opportunity to share my story was an honor as I am a fan of the show, frequently listening in my car or while I am doing chores around the house. Stacey is an award-winning radio news host and TV anchor/reporter with more than 20 years of broadcast news experience. We got to know each other on Facebook after I included her podcast in my blog post: Six Fantastic Resources for Type 1 Diabetes Support and Learning.
We found we had a lot in common – we were both mothers of a child with T1D, we both had a journalism background and were using it in different ways to raise Type 1 Diabetes awareness, and heck, we were both named Stacy (though she spells it wrong – just kidding!)
Stacey sent me a note inviting me to be a guest on her podcast. We talked about my daughter’s diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes in kindergarten, the often overlooked warning signs and why parents need to advocate for their children’s health, my subsequent writer’s block and entry into constant fight or flight mode, and how we were finally able to integrate Type 1 Diabetes into our lives.
This meant I was able to finally finish writing the romantic comedy novel I had put aside for months, Fooling Around With Cinderella, and I discuss what finishing the book symbolized to me. We also talked about hypothyroidism, diabetes books for kids, and my writing career. I hope you will give it a listen. You can find the Diabetes Connections podcast on podcast platforms including iTunes, Stitcher & iHeartRadio, and YouTube. Or, you can listen below. Please share the interview to help us get the word out about the warning signs – which unfortunately, many doctors still don’t seem to be aware of.
You can read all of my Type 1 Diabetes blog posts on my Family Diabetes Crossroads Page. Watch for more posts in the future. And I hope you’ll also check out more episodes of the Diabetes Connections podcast.
